Mexico in a few words


Tourism is an important asset for the economy of Mexico. Not only creates jobs and instigates local economic development but also helps to keep alive Mexico’s traditions and protect its natural resources.
Not many countries could claim to have been blessed with such a diverse cultural, historical and touristic heritage such as Mexico’s. Paradise beaches surround Mexico’s shorelines at Cancun, Los Cabos, Bahias de Huatulco, Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta, Cozumel and the white sand beaches of the Riviera Maya. All ideal places for practicing water sports such as fishing, diving, wind surfing, water ski and many more.
Another tourist attraction are the Colonial Cities, a unique opportunity for visitors to Mexico to experience first hand Mexico’s Colonial times. The Distrito Federal (or Mexico City), Queretaro, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, San Luis Potosí, Zacatecas are cities with a true Mexican character with historic economic, artistic and cultural legacy. Traces of what Mexico used to look like during the three centuries of Spanish occupation could also be found at Aguascalientes, Michoacan, Puebla, Oaxaca and Mexico’s City Historic Centre. The core of a nation once called New Spain.
Mexico’s heritage is not only made of colonial treasures and stunning beaches but also archaeological sites internationally recognised. So far 150 haeological sites have been explored and are accesible to the public and there are over 29.000 registered all over Mexico. Two of the most known ancient cultures of Mexico are the Aztecs of central Mexico and the Zapotecs in the Pacific Coast. The Olmecs, in the Gulf of Mexico, were the first civilisation in Mesoamerica and the Mayan, in the Yucatan Peninsula, was one the most advanced civilisations in history.
Mexico currently has 26World Heritage Sites (natural and cultural) listed by UNESCO.



Mexico has designated over 159Natural Protected Areas such as national parks, marine parks, areas of natural beauty and Biosphere Reserves. Nature tourism is an activity that has gain popularity worldwide and Mexico has become an important tourist destination for nature lovers from around the world.
The latest publication, Mexico Biodiversity world’s wonder, ranks Mexico fourth worldwide for its biodiversity.
Mexico also offers first-class cultural and recreational activities such as theme parks (Xcaret or Xel-Há), zoos, museums, magical towns (Comala in Colima, Cuetzalan in Puebla, Dolores Hidalgo in Guanajuato, Taxto in Guerrero, Huasca de Ocampo in Hidalgo, Izamal in Yucatán, Mezcaltitlan in Nayarit, Pátzcuaro in Michoacán, Real de Catorce in San Luis Potosí, San Miguel Allende in Guanajuato, Tapalpa in Jalisco, Tepotzotlán in the State of México, Taxco in Guerrero, Tepoztlán in Morelos, San Cristóbal de las Casas in Chiapas, Tequila in Jalisco and Tequisquiapán in Querétaro), Colonial Haciendas, lidos and spas amongst other attractions. Mexico is favourite amongst boat travellers, nearly half of worldwide cruise ship passengers arrived in Mexico.
Mexico City is a vibrant and living museum. The first settlers arrived here over 3,000 years ago and it has been the oldest city in the Western Hemisphere. Nowadays Mexico City is one the largest urban areas in the world with an international status.
Despite Mexico’s natural and cultural heritage is its people friendliness and local traditions the assets that continue to attract visitors to Mexico.
